Philip Morris is suing Norway

Philip Morris, a major tobacco company, is suing the state of Norway for making it illegal to display tobacco products in stores. From January 1st it became illegal to keep tobacco in the shelves visible for customers. According to HSH, The Federation of Norwegian Commercial and Service Enterprises, the ban has cost Norwegian kiosks and grocery stores more than half a billion.

Reitan Group makes record profit

- When our four areas of business together deliver an operating result of almost two billion NOK in a year we are happy of course. It enables us to invest and hire more employees than the 27.500 people that are now part of the Reitan system, the CEO and owner, Odd Reitan, said at the press conference for the publication of the 2009 result. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization increased with almost 600 million NOK from 2008 to 2009.

Rema 1000 number one chain in Finnmark

Last year Rema 1000 became the biggest grocery chain in the Finnmark region for the first time. From a total turnover of groceries in the region, Rema 1000 had a turnover 2.2 billion NOK, or 33.5 percent. Coop was second with a market share measured in turnover of 31.8 percent.


Minister of Finance wants moderate pay increase

The Minister of Finance Sigbjørn Johnsen says it is crucial for the export industry that the annual pay increase negotiation is moderate.

"Dagligvarerapporten 2010", statistics on the grocery business, from Nielsen has now been published. It shows that Rema 1000 has a market share of 20.3 percent. That is an increase of 1.6 percent from the last report. The second largest grocer chain is Kiwi, that has increased its market share from 12.5 percent to 13.5 percent. ICA has continued its fall, and lost 0.7 percent of the market share. It now has 15.7 percent of the market. Coop Norge lost 0.1 percent of the market share and NorgerGruppen increased by 0.2 percent.

Tine, a major producer of dairy products, had a great developmet of its result in 2009. The turnover ended at 18.9 million NOK and the result after taxes was 674 million NOK. The main factors behind the result is a focus on costes, innovation and increased sales.


NorgesGruppen sees a role for the agri coops - Power of the chains is not challenged

The chairman of NorgesGruppen, Knut Hartvig Johannson believes it is better to help making Gilde and Prior more effective than for the grocery chains to produce more private label products, writes Aftenposten. Johannson may be the most powerful man in the Norwegian grocery business. He is chairman of NorgesGruppen which controls 40 percent of the grocery stores in Norway.

The Norwegian Independent Meat and Poultry Association (KLF) is disappointed about the members of the board that has been appointed to investigate the power of the grocery chains I Norway. – The industry is badly represented, says the managing director of KLF, Dag Henning Reksnes.


ICA Norway with a 50 million surplus in the fourth quarter Tax on parking

ICA Norway had an operating surplus of 50 million Swedish kroner (SEK) in the fourth quarter. That is a strong improvement compared with the same period last year, when the grocery chain operator had an operating deficit of 230 million SEK.

Tax on private parking may be the Government’s next weapon against the growing car use in the cities. All forms of free parking; at work and at shopping malls will be affected, writes Dagsavisen, a newspaper. Only in Oslo, there are more than 120.000 free parking lots, according to Transportøkonomisk institutt. – The tax is being considered, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications confirms, but the political leaders of the ministry declined comment.

Odd Reitan, the owner of The Reitan Group and Rema 1000, predicts the biggest change in the grocery trade in ten years. Taking more control of the food supply from the agricultural cooperatives will lead to cheaper groceries for the consumer. Rema works to get more of its own products in the store. In the future there will be more of a mix between private labels and brands.
