Philip Morris is suing Norway

Philip Morris, a major tobacco company, is suing the state of Norway for making it illegal to display tobacco products in stores. From January 1st it became illegal to keep tobacco in the shelves visible for customers. According to HSH, The Federation of Norwegian Commercial and Service Enterprises, the ban has cost Norwegian kiosks and grocery stores more than half a billion.
The director of communications in Philip Morris International said to Dagens Nærningsliv, a business daily, that there is no proof the ban on visible tobacco has an effect on health. - The same legislation was all ready implemented on Iceland in 2001, and there is no indication that it has made more people quit smoking, she says. Philip Morris filed its case at the Oslo District Court on Tuesday. The goal is to remove the law. The case will probably go all the way to the Efta court because of its implications concerning EEC law.
