Tax on private parking may be the Government’s next weapon against the growing car use in the cities. All forms of free parking; at work and at shopping malls will be affected, writes Dagsavisen, a newspaper.
Only in Oslo, there are more than 120.000 free parking lots, according to Transportøkonomisk institutt. – The tax is being considered, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications confirms, but the political leaders of the ministry declined comment. What it clear is that legal expertise within the Government is reviewing the legality of the tax.
The goal is to change the law, enabling municipalities to collect a tax from existing private parking lots. Two different alternatives are considered. The first is that the owners of parking lots must charge extra, and collect the money for themselves. Or that the municipalities may charge a tax, and collect the revenue. It is not clear what the Government will decide.
